In the old days, all of Sumeru was forested. But at some point, a part of the region was overtaken by desert. Still... both regions are a part of Sumeru, even if the customs and beliefs of those who live in the desert are a little different than those who live in the forest.
There are oases in the desert where various plants will grow. And even outside of them, there are other types of plants that are well adapted to the harsh environment.
