I wish things were just explained from the start. Even if it's overwhelming, it's better than - finding out halfway, when you can't do anything about it.

But usually there's a person being accused from the start. And then them and the person accusing them both get a lawyer, and it's their job to present evidence and argue their case.
Then a group of neutral parties vote, basically, for who they think was right.
