[it's bowling day!!

nahida is not putting on bowling shoes (because she does not know the difference). rather, she seems to have purchase a different pair of shoes from somewhere, because she is lacing them up when alex comes in.

when she sees her, she waves.]

Hello! Would you like to try out this game with me?

[ it's fine, alex will not put on bowling shoes either. because. who is going to make her. she wanders over to nahida. ]

Sure! Not like I've got a busy day ahead of me.

[ not having anything to do is kind of killing her, actually, so this is perfect! ]

From what I can tell by looking at it, it seems like the point is to use those balls [she points at the racks of bowling balls] to knock those things [she points at the pins down the lane] over, isn't it?

Are there any other rules I should be aware of?

Nah, that's basically it. You get to roll the ball twice per turn, so you can try and knock down the ones you missed with your first try. And we just go back and forth doing that.

[ alex doesn't care about bowling enough to know exactly how the scoring works, but? the machines will probably do that for them. ]

Be sure to pick a ball that's not too heavy for you.

[ alex comes over and just kind of grabs a ball at random. she knows not to grab anything too heavy and past that does not have the expertise to care too much herself.

And make sure the finger holes aren't too big. You don't want to drop it on your feet.

[it is an experience she has not had but it is also an experience she would like to avoid.



finally she finds some of the lighter, child-sized bowling balls and picks one up.]

[ alex claps anyway. it was her first try!!!! ]

Nahh, the machine will bring it back. Watch your fingers, though.

[she'll wait.

...oh! there it is! once the ball comes to a stop, she picks it back up and returns to the lane. aims, rolls, and... it knocks over four of the remaining eight pins.

her ears droop a little.]

Oh...

[and now the machine is knocking down the rest to set up for alex's turn...]

Hey, that was a good first attempt! Pretty sure I've seen worse. Like... accidentally throwing the ball down a totally different lane worse.

[ alex rolls the bowling ball down the lane and hits 7 pins. not too shabby!! ]

she claps her hands]

Wow, you got a lot of them all at once!

[ i'm not rolling dice because i'm lazy, and as such... as soon as alex gets her ball back she gets a gutter ball.

and then just keeps talking confidently like she didn't. ]

I've got a little more practice, that's all. There's a bowling alley not too far from school. We've skipped class to go bowling, like, a dozen times. [ like twice. but whatever. ]

[even with her gutter ball she still has a higher score than nahida... tch]

On weekend nights they turn on black lights so everything's glowing and neon. I wonder if they do that here.
